Dental Veneers-Procedure, Do’s and Don’ts

Veneers are an excellent option to improve your smile, particularly if your teeth are chipped, misshapen, discolored, or cannot be whitened. The advantages of veneers include the fact that they can be completed in just two visits, the color can be changed easily, and the porcelain has the appearance of natural teeth and will not stain. Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that cover the front surfaces of teeth to improve their appearance. They’re usually composed of porcelain or resin-composite materials and are glued to your teeth permanently.

Procedure For Placing Veneers On Teeth?

To prepare a tooth for a veneer, the dentist will restructure the surface of the tooth to a thickness that is almost comparable to the thickness of the veneer to be applied to the tooth surface. You and your dentist will decide whether or not the area will be numbed before the enamel is removed. Your dentist will then create a model of your tooth, sometimes known as an impression.

Your veneer is created using this model, which is submitted to a dental laboratory. The veneers normally take 2-4 weeks to arrive from the laboratory. In the meanwhile, temporary dental veneers might be employed.

After that, your dentist will use dental cement to adhere the veneer to the tooth. They’ll utilize ultraviolet light to set the cement rapidly, and your new grin will be ready to go when you leave the office. This second appointment (when veneers are installed) usually lasts no more than two hours, though if a local anesthetic is needed, it may take an extra thirty minutes.

Things You Should Avoid After Getting Permanent Veneers:

  • Extremely hard food
  • Dark Liquids (red wine, coffee, black tea should be taken in moderation)
  • Tobacco Use; don’t smoke or use chewing tobacco
  • Alcoholic beverages and alcohol-based mouthwashes (which eventually damage the bonding material)
  • Highly acidic food (like lemons or tomatoes).
  • Don’t chew or bite into ice.
  • Using your teeth as a tool like opening a bottle, package, etc.
  • Eating sticky or hard candies

Things You Should Do Regularly After Getting Permanent Dental Veneers:

  • Always rinse your mouth with water after every meal to reduce the risk of staining.
  • If you are a daily tea or coffee drinker, use a straw to sip these beverages to reduce the direct contact with the teeth.
  • Use the back teeth to chew or bite into hard substances like carrots, hard candies, etc.
  • Use a retainer or splint to protect the veneers, if you have problem of clinching or grinding your teeth at night.
  • Wear mouth guard while playing sports.

Bonding and crowns are two veneer alternatives. Veneers are a good middle ground. If you wish to change the contour of your teeth more than just a small amount, as with bonding, but not enough to require a crown, veneers may be the best option.
